Thee "Garage Rock" ! |
|
- FRENCH LOCAL PRESS POINT OF VIEW
(...) Thee Gorgons, a heavily 6 t’s garage punk- influenced combo, comprises of four young belgo-parisians who got it together to deliver one of the most furious muzic that Camembert-land had ever heard. Since march 9th 1989, which saw their first live appearance in Châtillon (south of London), they’ve toured non-stop around Paris and its region,(south of Bethunes) London, Rennes and Brest … (that’s Brest in Britanny !!! no spelling mistake) (...) In the sixties, while the radio played sugar-sweet melodies, hords of local glories would choose a "wilder approach" to their music. Still keeping a very acute sense of harmonies, these young lads let their guitars go mad and bands found inspiration in the kitsch excesses of B-movie soundtracks or other horror flicks. The "garage" was in fact where they found a place to rehearse their newly developped material thus the term "garage bands" would stick around. The genre became popular again especially when compilations and re-releases (Pebbles, Nuggets, Back from the Graves) brought those quasi-unknown groups to a new kind of audiences. Such musical genre is still relatively alive especially with bands like The Cramps, a leader in that category.
It is therefore with such melodic sixties-rock mixed with seminal sonic punk sound that The Gorgons play with delight and talent. Even though the limits of the genre have been already defined, all is needed is the know-how to accomodate the ingredients. Ouest-France - Le journal de la Mayenne - feb 1993

(...) Swinging between original sixties-punk, 76’ punk and post-Cramps swamp-rock ("Gholio Monster" bears some parallels with the Cramps album "Khizmiaz"), Thee Gorgons have an appetite for recycling but create their own blend of fresh trash. Hard to hide their influences : Hangman Records favs, Thee Milkshakes, The String-Rays, The Mummies and Thee magnificent Headcoat(ee)s (Bruce Brand, Headcoats-in-chief and arrangeur extraordinaire had produced Thee Gorgons' 1st album)...so, for good measure : a dash of Gallon Drunk, the ghost of an old Cramps vinyl... (...) As you can imagine, with a blistering sound like the sound of Thee Gorgons, they can walk the walk, seem to be a tad obssessed with curvy ladies and saucy hip babes... so, can they talk the talk ? Those chaps have undoubtedly let their imagination run wild and with wet "wild pussies" as a main course and Carnous cannellonis (C.C.C.) as a side-dish, their Jewish catwoman antics are guaranteed to leave you... with a smile on your face and... no eardrums ! So "Come on, shake your hips/Come on hit your urghrwhhzh !" (I still love you). Bardaf n°1 - 1993 - Belgium
- The Gorgons manejan guitarras mucho mas swamp que recuerdan en momentos a Link Wray, adoran los intrumentales y desvelan una estetica mas parecida a la de los Milkshakes o Cannibals. Kick out the Jams n°9 - España

(...) Larsen n°4 - march 93 - France

And this is what
they have to say ...
Once upon a time
(1988) Riton
A, the frail blond singer asked Nobru the butch drummer if he fancied the
idea of starting the meanest band Paris had ever heard ! Not just Paris, dear
friends, as a matter of facto
but the french capital, its surroundings
as well as Bruxelles and the whole of Belgium including nonetheless than Brabant
and Knocke le Zout !!!
From then on started a long search for the next two recruits. Paris aint
London and to find the right people can be a bit of a challenge. Its
different now but back then, to find any good respectable musician you had
to be in real luck as evrybaudy was fed with soapy french-RnRubb
or Varietes tosh (Mireille Matthew/ Gilbert Because or even Zaza Distyll).
Nonetheless our two heroes never felt disaheartened and struggled the world
over in order to find the matching pair !
Riton A comes up with the bands name :
"THE GORGON" after
a memorable film evening at La Cinémathèque de Paris.
Eh oui !, please note (hardcore
fan only !) the first version of the bands name bears no "S"
at the end. Check out here the bands first poster in march 89.
As it goes, Riton A. literally sees the light as the auditorium cinema screen shows the end credit of the unforgettable piece of 50’s cinema thrash, I’m talkin’ about Terence Fisher’s THE GORGON. And how lucky you are me dearies, coz Uncle Pat pot has ditched out one the film’s early memorabilia !!! Jolly
good !
- Impatient to put into practice the embryonic ideas they’d nurtured for so long, and express their potential creativity, our two friends get their address books out and start phoning around. Riton A asks his old school mate Le Bousquet, who played alongside with him in the legendary "LOS PERAVOS", to take up the bass in a new combo. Unfortunately Le Bousquet can’t face up to the challenge, and seems far too busy with his other group, "LAS GAMBAS", who’ve just been drafted to support "The MISSION" on an australian tour. Le Bousquet, Rock'n'Roller by nite and university student by day suggest an old mate of his, the debonnair Pot Pat Pot : Le Pot(e), who is by now very involved with his hard-cold-trash-wave band "Zurück Placenta" decides to "have a go" even though his of sixties Garage is somewhat limited.
Three is a crowd (as they say)...
Nobru, in the meantime, tries his best to find the last band member in order to complete a quartet when ring ! ring !... The band already has a live set booked up : jeudi 9 mars 1989 the blessed date @ Salle des fêtes de Châtillon, a lorverly suburb in the south of the south of Paris (Les Hauts de Seine).
The fourth man story has yet to come. Watch out !!! Nothin’ NOW could stop these men ...
